Santa Says "Celebrate"

The Whistlestop was extra busy this Christmas. We have added a new design talent to our staff - Sharon is a welcome addition and it seems like she's been here forever. It seems like we have all been here forever. Christmas is a loooong holiday for floral designers.

Now Christmas Eve is finally here! All the poinsettias have been sold. There are just enough centerpieces for the last minute shoppers. And we are scrubbing the pine sap off our hands and preparing to depart to be with our families.

We will be closing at 2:00 pm today and will be closed the day after Christmas. The shop will reopen on Tuesday. But there is no break in the rush...we have three weddings on New Years weekend.

Lots of variety in these bouquets. Pink freesia, Sahara and Cool Water roses, robin egg blue hydrangea, purple lisianthus and dark pink celosia. There are two shades of roses (a red and hot pink) that I can't remember the name of...so sorry.

If you are a native of Central New York then we share the memories of Autumn. You can't deny it - it is in our bones. The smell of falling leaves and that exact color of golden sunlight that you can't describe, but you know it when you see it. One morning you realize that the birds have gotten quiet and a coworker will announce that they have seen a tree that has reddish leaves. Of course, the State Fair has come and gone so we accept that summer is gone as well. So let the pumpkins come! Put a hardy mum on every door step!

Or, you could get married.

We didn't get pictures of each Bride this weekend. But we did find time to click a few photographs of our pretty wedding in Skaneateles. There will be more details when the professional photographer shares the pics with us.

Let me caption what I liked about the flowers that Kim created .

The Bridesmaids bouquets were based with an armature of curly willow. The dahlias, coxcomb and hypericum berries set the main color scheme with accents of silvery foliage.

The church decorations were mainly silvery foliage with accents of reddish hypericum berries and ribbon.

The accent color became the main color in the pew bows which was a terrific choice for blending with the fabric.AND it became more interesting!.

The mantle was very traditional. All the florals and colors were combined with a bit of draping to break the parallel lines of the architectural elements.

Each guest table was named after an apple variety. And there were two different styles of centerpieces.This low version featured the curly willow armature. The silvery foliage and red flowers dominated. Notice that the golden shades were deleted.

The second version was taller. The curly willow was used to create some height instead of being bent into a ring as in the low centerpiece. Vine maple from California returned the golden colors to the theme. And the texture blended the willow with the deep placement of the dahlias and hypericum berries. And, of course, the silvery foliage was again the unifying agent.

When a Bride places her trust in us we are humbly grateful to share in her special day. But some Brides will give us additional room to be more creative while still staying true to the overall theme of the event. And that does not add even one dollar to the budget!

Summer Wedding with Sunflowers

If there is a more iconic flower for late summer than a Sunflower, I don't know what it would be. (Well, maybe a gladiola but that's a whole different generation.) At a glance, sunflowers are bold and friendly and lend a "Country Weekend" feel to your event. Or you can tweek the companion flowers and change the design style a bit and voila! French Provence.

Kim and our Bride Mary chose sweet and colorful dahlias, freesia, roses, stock and veronica to accompany the sunflowers. The ceremony and reception were adorned with sunflowers as well.

Classic Cascade Wedding Bouquet

Early in my career, I had the opportunity to learn how to properly construct a classic cascade bouquet. I then had the good fortune to have a business that allowed me LOTS of practice. At that time, all wedding work was what Florists called "wired and taped". Meaning that each individual flower had a wire stem that was wrapped in floral tape. All very time consuming. The more accomplished designers were able to create a very precise but flowing design.

Today, time is money but Florists are still called upon to create a custom handmade product. Thank goodness for all the amazing supplies that Floral Designers can utilize for short cuts. And these tools not only speed up the design process but also benefit the longevity of the fragile blossoms. However there is a downside.

It is my opinion that these gadgets are generating designers that are only able to create within a very narrow repertoire. In addition, modern brides love (and purchase) simple hand tied bouquets. We do them every weekend. But I lament that decades of technique is disappearing.

Beautiful Wedding Flowers

To you all at Whistlestop, especially to Kim, I would like to thank you for creating such beautiful flowers for my daughter’s wedding last week-end. When we visited the shop on Friday, we were just blown away at the beauty and imagination that was evident in the work that was done. Jen loved being labeled “the fun bride” by the staff and she was so amazed at how Kim just “got her” and knew just what she would like…who knew it was “shabby chic”! The ribbons in church were so awesome and we will be able to relive the memories of the wedding each time we wrap something special using those ribbons.

The ballroom at the Genesee Grande was just beautiful – and I appreciate so much you being able to re-use the flowers at the church there. The huge arrangement on the memorial table was commented on by so many guests – it was so gorgeous. The two arrangements on the alter at the Cathedral are still in excellent shape and I smile each time I look at them.

I have attached two photos which give you an idea of how happy Jen was on her way to church and how lovely the bridesmaid’s flowers looked at the Cathedral. I am sure Rebecca will have some amazing shots that she will share with you too, if you like.

Kate, an old high school friend of Jen’s, and a client of yours who will marry in November, stopped by the house yesterday to say hello (she lives in Colorado) and I got to show her your work. She was thrilled with it all too and it only seemed to make her more excited about how wonderful the flowers will be at her own wedding.

My husband and I are so very grateful for your terrific work and we will wholeheartedly recommend Whistlestop Florist to our many friends and family members facing their own children’s weddings in the coming years.

Attendants in a variety of dresses is rather fun but lets not go renegade with the footwear! Everyone in matching shoes please.

The black Chevari chairs look great with the linens. Sparkling glass vases are reflected in the mirrored place mats. And the whole look is tied together with the fabulous colors of the centerpieces and Japanese lanterns.

This is "thinking outside the box". They tug at my inner Fairy Princess and I think they are quite magical. Sure they are completely impractical but who cares. They make me happy when I look at them. And I think they would be charming for a Junior Bridesmaid.

They would be surprisingly easy to make. A slip on type of shoe or slipper, a tube of Oasis Floral adhesive and an abundance of tiny flowers, berries and snippets of moss.

I was asked to create a Flowering Garden with a gate. I just happened to have a miniature picket fence that I could cut in half. But a gate needs a reason for being so I made a pebble path. The path was lined with tiny violets which meanders and ends in a patch of miniature daffodils.

Our customer loved it and I had lots of fun making it. Perfect.

Yes, the Super Bowl ad featuring Faith Hill and the guy sending flowers was clever (and yes, his girlfriend probably broke up with him over what he wrote on the card). But have you ever wondered just how much of your money actually ends up in the vase when ordering through an online floral site?

Probably not…but then, you probably didn’t see the finished product either.

To understand what’s going on behind the curtain, you first need to know the players:

Wire services are companies most of us have heard of—FTD, Teleflora, Bloomnet, 1800Flowers, and the like. Originally created to link local brick and mortars to each other nationally (making it possible to place an order in Kansas City for delivery in Denver), they’ve jumped into the online business, now selling direct to consumers…at great expense to local florists.

Non-affiliated order gatherers (aka order takers) are a more slippery lot. They purchase local phone numbers in multiple cities, build websites behind each number to give the impression they’re a nearby brick and mortar, then route calls through a central phone bank somewhere out of state. Their role is to process and pump—take the money, grab their cut, then pawn fulfillment off to a third party who’s given pennies on the dollar to work with—often a warehouse operation, rarely an actual florist.

Where’s the money go?

Numbers for unaffiliated order gatherers are tough to come by; no two seem to play by the same set of “rules.” Wire services, however, are more easily charted, as they follow well-documented patterns:

Why cross your fingers and pray the business who “inherits” your online order can magically turn $35 into a $50 look and a ride across town? Instead, let’s get all that hard earned cash into your vase:

Step 1. Google “flowers” or “florist” plus the name of the delivery city

Ex: florist “Salt Lake City”

Check out the resulting websites, looking for a local phone number—not just a toll free number. If only the latter appears, beware; you probably landed on an order gathering call center. (Don’t assume a street address is legit; quite often, they’re commercial addresses at p.o. box locations.)

Step 2. Next, call the local phone number

When they answer, say the following (exactly as written):

“I’d like to come by to pick something out in person. Where are you located, and what are your hours this week?”

If they answer you straight up, it’s a brick and mortar florist. If, however, they work toward getting you to order over the phone or online instead, you just found a call center. Next in line, please…..

(Side note: After they confirm they’re an actual store, it’s okay to come clean. There isn’t a brick and mortar florist in the country who won’t thank you for checking to be sure they’re real.)

Step 3. Separate delivery from daisies

If you want a $50 floral arrangement, ask for a $50 floral arrangement. If, instead, you want the $50 to cover both the arrangement and delivery, tell the florist up front. Don’t assume delivery is free–it’s not (in spite of what the online sites lead you to believe…they may advertise a $50 arrangement with free delivery, but the expense comes out of the portion you thought was allocated for flowers).

Between paychecks, gas, and insurance, florists pay a premium to offer delivery service, then price it as low as they feasibly can. Don’t haggle; they’re already cutting numbers to the bone.

Mission accomplished

Your goal is pretty straightforward: Find pretty flowers, pay for pretty flowers, send pretty flowers—not fund a call center or national processing service. Dialing up a phone number or two instead of trusting your keyboard will make the difference between “ooh ahh” and “oh well” on the receiving end.

C’mon. Go for the gush. It’s worth it.

Phantom of the Opera

We got a call from Debra and Ron Ritchey at CNY Costumes to design a floral bouquet around a fabulous jeweled mask that Debra created. East Syracuse Minoa is presenting the first High School production of The Phantom of the Opera in the U.S. Debra has designed 166 costumes for the musical and was raving about the quality of the talent. As the costumer, she has been attending rehearsals and can't say enough about the amazing vocals. The show opens this weekend Thursday through Saturday and a repeat next weekend.

Clark and Walker

Alisha Clark and Luke Walker are husband and wife photographers. Both are brilliant and talented artists. I love Alisha because she has a wonderful sensitivity for capturing beautiful flowers.

I was enamored with the colors for an October wedding. The effect was seasonal but different, crisp and sophisticated.

Brides have been loving the cymbidium orchids this summer. However getting growers to ship the correct color is a bit challenging but we persevered. Girls - there is a reason to pick an wedding oriented Florist!

Fabulous Fall Weddings

A photo can't capture the color of these cymbidium orchids. Cinnamon, merlot, mocha - whatever combination of yummy names I can ascribe, it just won't do the trick. The butterscotch dahlias add wonderful texture along with the velvet swirls of coxcomb Celosia. Look closely to see the dark brown Fern Curls and the saffron Billy Balls. The entire bouquet was based with prairie green California hydrangea.

Ed Garente is the photographer and I am counting on him to get some detailed closeups to share with you.

Rosy burgundy dahlias and Black Baccara roses form the body of this Bridal bouquet. But the star is the flawless burgundy calla lillies. Coral hypericum berries add a seasonal touch.

The Wedding photographer is new to us...Chrissy Albright. She has an interesting website and I look forward to seeing her work.

Maybe tomorrow we can find time to snap a few images of the other three weddings. Especially a bouquet made with a wonderful rose called Creme Prophita...

Cymbidiums and Callas Lilies

My Friend Emmanuel Vaucher has captured a happy image of Bonnie and Tom.

Their smiles just light up the sunny afternoon and the golden hues of the flowers enhance the photograph. I especially like the grey tuxedo which the couple chose. Yellows and gray/silver are a color trend to watch.

Aisle Decorations

The Design Room chat last week was focused on aisle decorations. During the Labor Day weekend, four of our eight weddings had pew bows. Each different of course! So, while the topic was fresh in my mind, I went into the archives and pulled up images from past weddings.

This aisle may not fit all budgets but it sure is fantastic. White hydrangeas and roses with lush cascades of English Ivy. The fabric scarves are really not expensive and come in lots of shades. They make great chair sashes as well.

Okay, so this is a bit unusual but so was the wedding couple! The ceremony was in the evening during the Christmas holiday which helps to explain the gold ribbon. The Event Planner used them to decorate at the reception as well.

A candlelit church is romantic to the 10th power. The ribbon was a very luxurious embroidered gold and ivory fabric. Even without flowers this was an elegant pew decoration. The cost would be in the higher range because there is a rental charge and set up/retrieval labor.

Cool whites for a hot summer afternoon. We used true whites to achieve this bouquet. Also, note the interesting angle of the nosegay - if this was a "hand tied" bouquet, with natural stems, it wouldn't have the same panache. I love the soft greens of the sword fern peeking from the underside.

Vivid shades of blue, green and lavender complimented the family tartan. The Bride and Kim really came up with a winning color scheme.

The Maid's Bouquet was very similar to the Bride. However, the handle treatment and size were different. The Maid's handle was based with deep blue satin then French-wrapped in hyacinth blue double faced satin. The Bridal bouquet was wrapped in ivory double face

Lime green with a yellow tint and lavender with a grey tint are not an easy match but combined with the sapphire blue hydrangea..Wow. Add a bonnie plaid kilt and you have a unique wedding!

Babies Breath May Kill Cancer Cells

Researchers in England have discovered that extract from Babies Breath (Gysophila paniculata) could aid in the treatment of leukemia.

The researchers at The Simon Flavell Leukaemia Research Laboratory in Southhampton, observed that the molecules known as saponins, obtained after extraction from the plant, appear to break down cancer cell membranes. This assists antibody-based medications, known as immunotoxins, in assaulting the malignant cells and could augment the efficacy of these medications by more than one million times.

Dr David Flavell, whose son the laboratory is named after, says the finding could be applicable to several other cancer forms in addition to leukemia. Scientists are preparing a clinical trail, which is expected to take three to five years.

Spring Is All Around Us

When I pulled into my parking space and jumped out of the car, I immediately noticed the lovely fragrance of Lily of the Valley wafting in the air. I lingered for a few moments to take in the delicate scent and remember the lady who planted them. Grace Corlis was a Whistlestop neighbor for 28 years. She has been gone for three years now but her little garden patch lives on.

May 17th was the start of my 31st year in business. For 31 springs I have watched the Lily of the Valley bloom by my car. No matter how cold the winter or the ravages of the snow plow guy, the tiny flowers pop up every spring.

Snow Drops - Perce Neige

Today is the first day of spring - usually Syracuse celebrates with a major snow storm. But March 20th, 2010 is a HOME RUN. A sunny, warm and glorious end to a fine week.

We earned it. Emmanuel, thanks for the photo.

Wedding season has started and we are thankful to be so busy. Congratulation to Chandra and Jason. I'll bet they never expected to have outside photos! Of course, we will have photos at a later date.

But today it is all about Glorious Spring. I'm getting myself a bunch of red and yellow Parrott Tulips for the table and taking a walk in the back yard. Maybe the rabbits and deer missed a few of the bulbs I planted last fall...we'll see.

Sunshine makes me Daffy

There are two things I like about March. Daffodils and Basketball. But it is not that simple. If Central New York is grey and snowy, I am not so compelled to crave billows of bright yellow. But, when the snow melts and the sun is shining, nothing satisfys like Daffys.

And when the Orangemen are in Madison Square Garden I know the Robins will be singing from the treetops.

But when SU is on a winning streak and I have a big bouquet of Daffodils on the coffee table...well, it's all GOOD.

We had fun and excitement yesterday when News 10 Now and Channel 3 WSTM came to film for Valentines Day. The Shop was a mad swirl of customers and news crews. Everyone had a great time with Megan Coleman the early morning Co-Anchor of WSTM. There were lots of surprised customers that morning!

I recognized reporter Cat DeMaria from News 10 Now right away. She and her camera man Ben convinced Colleen and Mary to design for the camera. And soon we were all at ease and the afternoon flew by.

If anyone noticed the absence of posts in January, my husband and I were visiting family in Florida. We had lots of fun but it was rather cold. Day after day of freezing nights was very hard on the butterflies, anoles and tree frogs. But that's a story for another day.

Military weddings are one of the best examples of how traditions and rituals can be the foundation for creating a truly memorable event.

What most guests at a military wedding are most likely to remember is the "crossed sabers," or the arch of steel. The word steel is synonymous for and used to represent either sabers for the Navy or swords for Army, Air Force and Marines. Traditionally the bride and groom walk through the arch of swords. That passage is meant to ensure the couple's safe transition into their new life together.

The arch of swords procedure is a simple and elegant one. The honor guard form two lines opposite each other. On the command of "draw sword "or "draw saber," the steel is raised with the right hand, with the cutting edges facing up. The couple enters the arch, kiss, and then pass through. The newly married couple then salute the honor guard. Members of the honor guard then sheath the swords and return them to a carry position.

Yet another tradition is the gentle "swat to the backside" that the bride receives from the last swordsman. In addition, it is also traditional for the wedding cake to be cut with a saber or sword.

Readers may be interested to know that these wreaths - some 5000 - are donated by the Worcester Wreath Co. of Harrington, Maine. The owner, Merrill Worcester, not only provides the wreaths but covers the trucking expense as well. He has done this since 1992. A wonderful guy. Also, for most years, groups of Maine school kids combine an educational trip to D.C. with this event to help out. Making this more remarkable is the fact that Harrington is one of the poorest areas in the state.

We loved this Bridal bouquet! The color combination was dramatic...note the interesting texture from the sunflower in the center. What sunflower you ask? Look closer and you will see that the outer petals were removed to reveal the unique center core.

Kim is a good listener. She hears and processes every little thing a Bride says. Her goal is to help the Bride make choices that will coordinate with the invitations, favors, dresses etc and create a sense of continuity with the flowers. (And all within a budget)

That is what a florist should do...it's part of our job. I happen to think Kim is especially good at it.

At the Greystone Castle, this dramatic centerpiece of hydrangea and roses was simple yet showy. The remodeled church retained it's soaring ceilings so a tall table decoration is ideal.

This church arrangement represents a popular silhouette. The design is low, mounded and densely packed with flowers but softened with a sweeping fall of lily grass and calla lilies.

The sun was shining for this outdoor ceremony and reception which is something Central New York residents really cherish!

The Bride prefered a traditional color but updated it with tropical flowers. Curly willow, coonte palm and variegated flax provide structure for the arch which is accented with all white dendrobiun orchids, anthirium and Casa Blanca lilies.

Hot pink and green for July Bride

This Bride chose very traditional design styles using hot pink and lime green flowers. The bouquets were full 3/4 nosegays (as opposed to hand tied) which look lavish and opulent from every angle.

The flower list included green cymbidiums and dendrobium orchids, hot pink Attache roses, pale pink spray roses, kermit pompons, lily grass, italian ruscus and curly willow.

I wish Syracuse could have provided a sunnier day. It has been a difficult year for outside photos.

Froggy in the Flowers

Well, this is a bit different.

This little guy arrived in with a shipment of foliage plants from Florida. Pat from Ponto's Greenhouses thought he would surprise me with it. Perhaps he imagined I would scream like a girl and run. However, I did neither. Even though I am a girl, I happen to be fond of small creatures.

I've named him Ponto. (Pat seemed to be a dumb name for a tree frog) Ponto the Frog has a new home at The Whistlestop. And if looks to be a bit sleepy that is because he has just gulped down two tiny crickets and now it is nap time.

Ponto is quick to change color to his surroundings and it is quite charming to watch. I was thinking of putting a St Patrick's Day green carnation in his terrarium to see if he was up to the challenge. But he is just a baby... only the size of a kidney bean. Maybe next year.

No two days are ever alike at the shop. But stop in to see Ponto and pick up some springy flowering plants. We have St Patricks Day bouquets as well.

First Sign of Spring

Okay, so it's snowing again and the cold is starting to get depressing. But in the morning, if you listen closely, you will hear the male cardinal singing from a tree top. Or, in my case, from the peak of my roof.

And the days are getting longer. It's great to have daylight at 5:30 when leaving work! Pretty soon the crocus will be popping up through the snow and the Robins will be back.

Springs Brides are popping up as well. We participated in "An Affair to Remember " Bridal Show at the Lodge in Skaneateles. And we met some new vendors that we wanted to share with you.

The Village Candy Shoppe in Manlius (www.VillageCandyShoppe.com) and Woodmark Chocolate of Liverpool. (www.woodmarkchocolate.com) My husband and I had a great time meeting Kathy Chappini at her yummy store that is just brimming with unusual and hard to find chocolate and candy. After tasting Woodmark truffles, I had to call Paul Dederich and compliment him on the taste and quality of his candy. Next time I'm in Liverpool I will be sure to look for his store.

I would urge Brides and chocoholics to give them both a try.

The roly poly Santa says "Take me home with you". And there are more Elves and Angels waiting for a visit from you.

The Shop is decorated and looks particularly festive. As we were unpacking boxes and filling shelves, snowflakes started falling. The first stirring of Christmas spirit bubbled forth and before I could stop myself I shouted "Lets listen to Chrismas music!"

Well, that didn't go over as well as I expected with my co-workers. After much rolling of the eyes everyone agreed that it was too early. However, I have the remote....yes, sometimes it is good to be the Boss.

E B Morgan House Photo Shoot

A perfect day will come along once in a while. You can't plan them, they just happen. I call them "a moment in time" when events unfold in magical progression and you are swept along for a delightful journey.

Bright and early on Tueusday, Kim, my husband John and I loaded the car with bundles of flowers, plates, dishes and candles and headed off to a photo shoot for Wellwed Magazine. We stopped at the Purple Hippo to pick up pink and black Petite Fours to go along with the placecard cookies from Gen Comfort at She Takes The Cake. We were seduced by the fresh baked aromas and treated ourselves to coffee and the best Lemon Blueberry Scone I have ever tasted.

Good company and cheerful conversation made the hour long trip fly by. The beauty of the lush countryside had us giddy by the time we arrived in Aurora. Little did we know that the best was yet to come.

We were greeted at the door of E B Morgan House by Lauren whose executive duties seemed to be making everyone welcome, informed and immediately comfortable. WellWed Magazine Editor Krista, her assistant Sara and intern Alison were already at work staging the scene. We were immediately wowed by the stunning decor. Chantiza Stern from Table Toppers of Rochester had draped the diningroom table with black and white floral linens which looked smashing with the miles of deep pink and mango silk draperies. Krista was clearly on her game as she bagan to layer the table with china, crystal stemware and flower arrangements. Photographer Alyson Beth started clicking away and the morning just flew by. But that is all I am going to reveal because I want to keep you in suspense until the next issue comes out.

We had so much Fun! Kim and I have been creatively recharged and energized by our experience. So I want to add a grateful thank you to the talented ladies who will always be in my minds eye when I recall the memory of this perfect day.

WellWed in New York

The anticipation has been building since early spring and it has finally arrived! The new Fall and Winter issue of WellWed in New York is in release. The cover layout is drop dead gorgeous and the featured articles and photos have lots of great ideas for Brides.

Kim designed a Fall bouquet which got a full page photo on page 77. We couldn't be prouder. The photo shoot was at The Bellhurst Castle in Canandiagua and the image was taken by Alyson Beth Photography at www.alysonbeth.com .

Kudos to Editor Krista Washburn for recognizing that Upstate New York has merits and abilities to showcase.

First Dance as Mr and Mrs

Dancing with the stars (in their eyes) at the Lincklaen House in the lovely village of Cazenovia. It is a nice location for a destination wedding or a sunny summer luncheon. Mary Margaret and her staff are very accommodating. I like what she did with the maids bouquets in the mantle.

Please set aside time this week to pray for the spiritual healing of our nation, wisdom for our leaders and safety for our soldiers fighting overseas.

It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who died in defense of our country, in defense of us, in wars afar away. The imagination plays a trick. We see these soldiers in our mind as old and wise. We see them as something like the Founding Fathers, grave and grey haired. But most of them were boys when they died, and they gave up two lives, the one they were living and the one they would have lived. When they died, they gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up there chance to be revered old men. They gave up everything for our country, for us. And all we can do is remember.

Different stuff huh!

Chick's friend Hitomi Gilliam has been in New York for a couple of weeks. She was a featured speaker at The Everson Fine Art and Flowers April 5th and 6th and in Buffalo last weekend. Hitomi is one of the Premier Floral Artists in the world...yes, that's right, the world. And she is fabulous!

You may wonder "what would I do with this?" But it is like Haute Couture or Fine Art. It is provocative and imaginative. It compels us to step outside the everyday world and see objects in a new way.

The Whistlestop Designers were inspired and caught up with our fellow Florists from Buffalo and Ontario. A great weekend all around.

The King and Queen of Spring

Tulips and Daffodils...when they arrive at the shop in glorious abundance can the first Robin be far behind. Actually, I saw a chubby and very healthy looking robin on Woodchuckhill Road last Sunday!

My Grandma used to recite a little poem to me each spring.

Tulips in the garden.

Tulips in the park.

I read a news article about America being in the midst of a baby boom. That's terrific because we love to create designs for newborns.

Today we set up a baby shower at a local club. The Hostess provided the toys. Kim and Colleen provided the talent. There were six different tables and here are photos of three.

Pigs "Spring" Forth

Gone are the poinsettias, the glitter and the pine. Spring is slowly appearing throughout the shop. Daffodils and tulips, primroses and azaleas can be found in the sunroom and flower cooler.

We've a ways to go before the shop is transformed for Valentine's Day and Easter.

Chick is off to The Dallas Merchandise Mart for the 2008 Christmas Expo. AND a tractor trailer just arrived and we unloaded a skid of spring pottery (which we bought in August)

Counting My Blessings

Thanksgiving kicks off the busy Holiday Season. Our clients have been coming in a steady stream to pick up a beautiful centerpiece like the one above and view the Christmas decorations throughout the store. This year I'm counting my blessings like never before. Looking past politics, stock markets, gas prices and wars I am grateful to God for all the things I do enjoy. And must I remind myself to see the beauty around me with "fresh eyes" each day. Syracuse is a great place to live.

Tis The Glitter Season!

Round about November I come home with tiny sparkly bits of glitter stuck to my face. My husband will say "Uh oh, the glitter season has started!". Eventually glitter will spread to my entire family. But they don't complain too much because what would the holidays be without a bit of twinkle and sparkle...

One whole corner of the shop is devoted to a "Retro Christmas" theme. It's fun, nostalgic and verrrry glittery.
